Compared with the studies of foreign music history and ancient Chinese music history, it is characterized by “near” and “new”. Historically speaking, the “Opium War” in 1840 is regarded as the beginning of the modern Chinese history. Therefore the music history in China after 1840 is called “the modern Chinese music history”, which is based on the sociology because after that war China became a semi-colony and semi-feudal society. Nowadays there are two different stage separations of the modern Chinese music history, that is, “there-stage way” and “two-stage way”. The study of the modern Chinese music history bagan in 1930s-1940s, got formed in 1950s-1960s, paused for a decade during the “Cultural Revolution”, and made great progress in 1980s-1990s.
